This educational film was distributed in 1968 to warm Angelinos up to the notion of public transportation. It’s a little goofy, but surprisingly interesting. If you have half an hour to kill, it’s worth a watch.
Over forty years later, the film’s message still resonates; in a metropolis, everyone benefits from public transportation. However, here in Los Angeles, many of the most congested routes still lack sufficient mass transit alternatives. Further, the appearance of wealth is so important that a stigma exists for non-drivers. As long as the automobile remains an aspirational status symbol, change won’t come easily. It’s a shame too, because carless commuting is really great. I should know; I’ve been doing it for over six years. It’s kept me happy, and healthy. Can anyone say the same of their car?
